Join Generation Restoration
In 2024, World Environment Day focuses on restoring land, halting desertification and building drought resilience. Up to 40 per cent of the world’s land is already degraded, while an estimated 3.2 billion people worldwide are negatively impacted by desertification, and more than three-quarters of the world’s population is expected to be affected by droughts by 2050. The message is clear, we must restore ecosystems to tackle climate change, save species from extinction and secure our future.
Watch this 1-minute video: ‘World Environment Day 2024: will you join Generation Restoration?’
The words and the images focus on these three things that humans must focus on to tackle climate change and save species from extinction.
Revive lands.
End desertification.
Secure water.
Choose one of the 3 themes, and as you listen notice the words and images that appear on the screen. After you have listened take one of those images and use it as a prompt to write a paragraph that gives your personal response to the message.

Ours is not a short story. It's an epic tale written over eons. I, the Earth, have known you over hundreds of thousands of years. I’ve witnessed your achievements,
your ingenuity, your pain. You are the first generation to fully understand my suffering. And you might be the last that could see my lands revived. To all generations - the adventurers, the pioneers, the thinkers and the dreamers - to all of you, let's find common ground in what unites us. Restore my lands for future generations. A tree begins with a seed. Generation Restoration begins with you.
