World Water Day is held every year on 22 March to raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water.

In families around the world without access to drinking water it is invariably girls and women who have the task of water collection. This gender-specific role has a severe impact on every aspect of women’s and girl’s lives. You can read about ways that water collection negatively affects them in Unit 12 of Develop Your English: with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (free to access).
