The Academic Writing Guide is an interactive web-based resource that introduces you to the research process and to argumentation. It has a Creative Commons licence making it free to use, and is designed for self-access. It consists of practice tasks and exemplars to help you research and write a discursive essay of your own.

Using the Academic Writing Guide will help develop a range of academic skills such as:

  • how to support your opinions with academic sources/evidence

  • how to make effective use of the Library to find sources

  • how to choose appropriate sources from the range on offer 

  • how to skim read over chunks of irrelevant texts to find what is relevant 

  • how to read and understand academic prose/journal articles 

  • how to interpret an assessment task 

  • how to develop a position on your topic (see the 'Argumentation' resources)

  • how to incorporate ideas gained from your reading into your own writing
