‘Each year on 20 June, the world celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. This year, World Refugee Day focuses on solidarity with refugees – for a world where refugees are welcomed.’ (UN Refugee Agency).

Watch this short film (10 minutes) that challenges stereotypes about refugees by focusing on what unites us rather than what sets us apart. In the film permaculture expert, teacher and Congolese refugee Bemeriki Bisimwa Dusabe – The Mushroom King – who is currently living in the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Uganda, meets Gaz Oakley, a chef, author & YouTuber originally from Wales, UK. They talk about their shared passion for growing food and teaching others about it.

As you listen pause the video when you hear something that is meaningful to you and write it down. Share one sentiment that matters to you with one other person in any way you choose.

In Unit 8: SDG4 Quality Education of Develop Your English: with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (free to access) you can hear from three young adult refugees living in a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya talking about their higher education, and read about Daahir, a young Somalian, sharing what it’s like trying to finish school in a refugee camp in Uganda.
